Giving Kim Novak Her Due.
I commemorate the primary hour I epigram PICNIC…and Kim Novak. It was at the RKO Virginia Theater in Champaign, Illinois, on a Sunday afternoon in January 1956; tautological to say, I have never forgotten that day. PICNIC was the catalyst that made me be aware of and commiserate just completely what unrealistic man was all about – and I was all of nine years old.
From that age despatch I was “hooked” on Kim Novak – and carry on so more than 50 years later. Since the advent of household video, I mind PICNIC at least once a year. I existent now in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and so this year’s viewing (about a month ago) was shared with two Argentine friends who had never seen the film. Prior to watching PICNIC, I served a dinner of American cinch staples (potato salad, three-bean salad, etc); later we had brownies with ice cream.
PICNIC still holds up after all these years, and although it may not be one of the best films ever made, it regardless remains a time-honoured illustration of its time, reflecting 1950s mid-west America in all its Eisenhower homage and hypocrisy. I don’t fancy for a put in an appearance again to those days, far from it, but PICNIC always brings back stormy memories of my childhood, which includes my still unrequited take pleasure in for Kim Novak, the victory and only movie actress that this 62 year well-known many-coloured mankind ever wanted to marry. I loved Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth with all my heart, but I never felt for them the same as I did (and still do) for Kim Novak; I’m as hopelessly in sisterhood with her today as I was 52 years ago. An underrated actress? Absolutely. She never did more or less on partition than what was asked of her, which means she did her province as a cover actor, and the best part of those roles required her to be alluringly frigid in the look-but-don’t-touch method with an supplementary red-hot blow up of energy.
Two unforgettable performances: THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE and THE MIRROR CRACK’D. Long material Kim! Give this maid an titular Oscar as soon as possible!
